New Dark Age

Through the years of waiting, anticipating something to come
I became the fall guy, nothin' but a small guy under the gun
Now I got the number, gettin' out from under a slumber of years
They're never gonna fix it up, oh no
Baby now it's up to us, oh yeah

Oh, it's the dark days
Oh, of a new dark age

It's just me and you dear, this is the New Year everything's lost
So let us be of good cheer, we're gonna stay here, we're gonna love
I have come to see that it's not only me that had become so numb
They're never gonna fix it up, oh no
Baby now it's up to us, oh yeah

Oh, it's the dark days
Oh, of a new dark age

Oh, it's the dark days
Oh, of a new dark age

And let me level with ya' baby now (they're never gonna fix it up)
never never never never no no (never gonna fix it up)
Now don't ya' think the times are tough enough?
Don't ya' think it's time to toughen up?

So turn the light up, baby turn the light up shinin' tiny new
Turn the light up, baby turn the light up

I'm wide awake and kickin' at the door now
Feelin' like there's somethin' to explore now
I'm hungry and bite off some more now, and I'm kickin' at the door
I'm hungry and wide awake, I'm feelin' like my life's at stake
I'm gonna live for the livin's sake and I'm kickin' at the door

BILLBOARD ON THE MOON

Steel pipes sing for the rainbirds' dance and nobody's there
but me to stand alone by the grey pay phone and hear the symphony
Diamond drops shoot through the air with each whirring pass
and leap for the lawn that'll soon be gone replaced by glued-in grass

Take a walk real late at night When everybody is asleep
Can you see how sad it is? Can you see how bad it is?
Signs look silly when nobody reads 'em
Traffic lights change and nobody's there to see 'em
Put a billboard on the moon I'll be there soon

Streetlights line the streets and shine a purple eerie noon
for the criminals and the cops (who always gotta stop and ask
ya 'bout what you're doin')
Ya' float somewhere above your hat tied like a balloon
and ya' see your reflection and ya' just gotta laugh
Ya' know that isn't you

Take a walk real late at night When everybody is asleep
Can you see how sad it is? Can you see how bad it is?
Signs look silly when nobody reads 'em
Traffic lights change and nobody's there to see 'em
Put a billboard on the moon I'll be there soon

I know a painter who paints in blood in an empty room
He'll soon be dead from the colors that he's bled
To paint a billboard for the moon

Take a walk real late at night When everybody is asleep
Can you see how sad it is? Can you see how bad it is?
Signs look silly when nobody reads 'em
Traffic lights change and nobody's there to see 'em
Put a billboard on the moon I'll be there soon

OVERCOATS

Who's gonna drive the cadillac take her down and bring her back?
Somebody's got to choose a suit
One of us better stay back home to open the mail and get the phone
and help 'em put away the food

Oh, please send the strength I need to help me
keep myself together, please
Oh, no, I'm in this house alone
I'm never gonna make it through those old overcoats

I open a box and lyin' there is a keychain woven from his mother's hair
a box of his own baby blond hair too
Well, I can't think of anything worse than a stranger speakin'
phoney words over the body of a man that lived so true

Oh please, send the strength I need
To help me find the flashlight and the keys
Oh, no, I'm in here all alone
I'm never gonna make it through those old overcoats

MONKEY SEE (monkey do)

Hey Mr. Edison miracles did appear: A skyless star, a mechanical

voice sang songs
We've taken your medicine, and now we're livin' so long
we have the time to wonder what went wrong
I've been hounded underground while you guys up there
flyin' twice the speed of sound
Monkey see (monkey do)
We came down from the trees to live in a zoo
Monkey me monkey you
Watch out what ya' dream cuz what ya' dream can come true

Birds are creatures without words
If they could talk they'd say "We'd rather sing!"
Below what you think you know
The real Cosmic Carnival is happening
After they anesthetize your mind, ain't it fun to feel
your passion pump like a jungle drum

Monkey see (monkey do)
We came down from the trees to take a walk on the moon
Monkey me (and ya' little monkey you)
Watch out what ya' dream cuz what ya' dream can come true

We'll find out what it takes
to learn from our mistakes

And we nearly dissolve in the belly of the city as
intestine streets curl around so hideous
digesting traffic jams the pity is
THIS DON'T HAVE TO BE!
no no no
We could be kind where we used to be cruel
and the spirit could burn where it used to be cool
Follow your heart, I'll follow my heart too
with a little monkey see and a little monkey do
Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey do The Monkey (monkey me monkey you)
monkey, monkey, monkey
Watch out what ya' dream (because you are what you dream! )
Watch out what ya' dream cuz what ya' dream can come true

CHANGE IN A CHILD'S HAND

All I can do
Every large and small disorder in me's in front of you
Dreams and wishes on the wings of hope sometime get through
when there's CHANGE IN A CHILD'S HAND
when there's CHANGE IN A CHILD'S HAND

Drippin' candle in Madrid

Reflect upon the kid ya' hid and all the younger things ya' did
And so ya' buy a flower and give the kid a dollar
and leave the CHANGE IN A CHILD'S HAND

And now I'm standin' in the wet
I wanna see your face, and yet
The window's clouded with your breath
I'll have to wait awhile, I'll have to wait awhile I guess

And there's music everywhere, you're just afraid
but you can make that disappear
Settle back and hear the jingle
The jingle of the CHANGE IN A CHILD'S HAND

DANGEROUS

Dangerous — Everybody is alone
It's strange for us (even talkin' on the telephone)
Look at the sunset materialize
yellow like the blood of a bug drippin' down the dirty purple sky
Electric light has canceled the night
Now things are goin' bump in the day

DANGER there's too many strangers
and DANGER can make a heart a stone

Dangerous — and life is hard
in a world of the nookely bomb, starvation and the credit card
People Who Need People - they must be very happy here, but I wish
a couple billion would take a rocketship away somewhere
I gotta admit that I'm frightened a bit
now things are goin' bump in the day

DANGER there's too many strangers
and DANGER can make a heart a stone

There's too many strangers caught in the danger zone
It makes your heart a stone

I'm walkin' down the street thinkin' on my feet
I wonder how the ground feels covered in concrete
If a man falls in the city, ya' know it doesn't make a sound

The ghosts of all the wild things that man has displaced
they howl and growl and they haunt this place
they croak and sing invisible wings are flappin' around my face
I'm Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay watchin' a thousand fish decay
Money does the talkin' and The Money don't care — EVERYWHERE

DANGER there's too many strangers
and DANGER can make a heart a stone

BUILD A SUBMARINE

Isn't it amazing how the flowers grow?
How in slow motion all the colors BOOM explode?
I feel a gentle breeze blow cool across my skin
Sweet Breath of Nature I open up and let it in
But livin' in the city/All these people gonna make me mean
I wanna go someplace green and build a submarine
Build a submarine

I was playin' in a nightclub just like a thousand other nights
I took a break out on the patio to get away from all the
chitter chatter and the hollow laughter. And I happened to look up,
"Is that the moon? Yeah, that's the moon! That's the moon
up in the sky!" And as I stood in the twilight
A great blue heron flew right by (and it was then that I realized)
that I don't wanna play here cuz all these people gonna make me mean
I wanna go someplace green and build a submarine

Freeze to me baby, just hold me tight
Dive down with me momma, everything's gonna be alright
In a better place where fashion ain't The Thing
When money talks it's always sayin' somethin' obscene
Come on come on come on we'll build a submarine, and we'll
Dive for dreams far beneath the waves there's a better place
mr. cummings said, "dive for dreams or a slogan may topple you"
And I said "Kick that TV straight off the top of you"
And I said "Kick that TV straight off the top of you"

We've got the power, alright
We've got the power to Beat THE MACHINE
BUILD A SUBMARINE

THE BOB CRANE MEMORIAL BAND

I'm lookin' for a woman with a ski slope nose
who can suck a tennis ball through 20 foot of half inch hose
And when I find her I'll love her a lot
She'll wanna get married but I ain't gonna
I'm goin' on the road with The Bob Crane Memorial Band

When you're out on the road with The Bob Crane Memorial Band
And ya' dream about Tahiti you're gonna wake up tan
Dream you're sick, you'll wake up well
Dream you're in heaven, wake up in a motel
Out on the road with The Bob Crane Memorial Band

I dreamed I seen the devil dressed up in a business suit
he grabbed an MX missile and he played it like a flute

I'm lookin' for a city that ain't got no cars
No cops no crime just trees and squirrels and bars
No cadillacs no Honda Civics only rock'n'roll (no rock'n'roll critics)
are out on the road with The Bob Crane Memorial Band
are out on the road with The Bob Crane Memorial Band
are out on the road with The Bob Crane Memorial Band

Well, it's the way that he would want it
Everybody give a hand now now
to the boys out on the road with The Bob Crane Memorial Band

WINDMILL HILLS

On 580 headin' east you'll pass through 'em goin' for the San Joaquin
And in the spring they're lush and lovely rollin' in a deep dark green
It makes ya' wanna stop and climb up 'em and roll down 'em from the top
And in the summer heat they look like giant ladies layin' naked in a
heap asleep
Brown from the sun and so inviting that ya wanna lay on one (or some)
and I still get the chills every time that I ride by those
Windmill hills

Windmill hills
I still get the chills every time that I ride by
those windmill hills

Up there long ago they gave a party starrin' The Rollin' Stones
And people came from near and far (like army ants come to a
hunk of candy bar) And I'll never forget that Hells Angel with
the buffalo head hat. From on top of beat up bus he took
a leak on one of us (not me). About half a mile away you
could just make out little Mick up there hoppin' around on the
stage. He must have been afaid. I'll admit that I was on
that day.

Windmill hills
I still get the chills every time that I ride by
those windmill hills

Well, everything I've sung about so far in this song happened way before those windmills came along. I don't know for certain
why they stuck 'em up. My guess is it has to do with rich folks
makin' bucks. Money from the wind. There's Power in those hills
Electricity bills. But I still get the chills every time that
I pass by those windmill hills

Windmill hills
I still get the chills every time that I ride by
those windmill hills

GROWING NEW YOU

Light the candle by the bed, lay down your head
no book no music no dreamin', ya' just lie there like you're dead
Hear a catcall in the street, through the wall ya' hear a T.V.
Everyone knows where they're goin', but to you it all seems so empty
Yes, I know what you're goin' through
You're a Prisoner of Doubt on the inside lookin' out
and you've haven't got a clue, oh
All of the suffering you do is growing new you

You don't talk about success, you don't think like all the rest do
Ya' tell yourself it's all makin' sense somewhere
and there will come a rescue
And ya' try and do your best, and ya' buy a brand new dress
You force yourself to go to their parties but it all seems so grotesque
Yes, I know that life can be cruel
First ya' hurt 'till ya' laugh then ya' laugh 'til it hurts
Is this what you deserve? No,
All of the suffering you do is growing new you

Yes, I know that life can be cruel
but you need all the pain like a flower needs the rain
It's real and it's true, oh
All of the suffering, all of the suffering, all of the suffering
you do
All you're goin' through is growing new you

GUARDIAN ANGEL

I'm lookin' for an angel to shine a light on me tonight
I need a guardian angel like a shadow needs a light
Take a look around you vanity, ego: empty liquor bottles
in a dormitory window. Guardian Angel shine a light on me tonight

I'm lookin' for an angel to be my girl
But is there any gender in your angel world?
I'm gettin' further off the beaten track so tell me the truth
forget the facts. Guardian Angel be my girl

Guardian Angel what's the angle that can extricate me from this
tangle. I can't believe this is happening to me

Desperate lookin' women and tired lookin' men
It's the logical conclusion in Mumbo Jumbo Land
But the moon still rises shinin' light comprised of
somethin' absolutely free (and freedom means everything to me)
I can't believe this is happening

It's a comfortable country Mary, Bob and Bill, but ya' better
think for yourself or somebody else will Guardian Angel
shine a light on me tonight

Bless all the children and the innocent of heart
help 'em hang tough but don't let 'em hang hard
Guardian Angel shine a light on me tonight

Don't ya' slumber, keep your sense of wonder, never knuckle under
to the weirdness in the world
Shine a light on me tonight

Guardian Angel what's the angle that can extricate me from
this tangle I can't believe this is happening to me

QUEEN GENEVA

Leggy Lady won't ya' let him in he's your dead on double and you're
his hipbone twin
He's goin' crazy in a gold dabloon well he's out on the levy
got a spoon out chewin' moon
DEEPER Geneva DEEPER Queen Geneva. Don't ya' know that he's the
best you've ever seen? Don't ya' know that he's the one that
makes you queen?

Pick up the phone and only say his name and when he getcha'
alone he's gonna bust that ball and chain
He's got the special touch (that's not around too much) that's
what ya' really want
DEEPER Geneva DEEPER Queen Geneva. Don't ya' know that he's the
best you've ever seen? He's the one that makes you queen?

And he knows ya' better than ya' know yourself
Better than anybody he can touch ya' he can take ya'
DEEPER (that's right!) DEEPER (yeah, now ya' got it)
Don't ya know that he's the one that makes ya' queen

You got the Royal Walk, the Gift for Breakin' Out
So cut the chitchat talk you should be gettin' down
DEEPER, DEEPER (etc.)

Be brave in love and we will all be kings and queens

SHE'S INSIDE THE MOON

I met a girl down by the railroad track, blouse on backwards
hair dyed black, only 15, she'd already seen her day
Her mama beat her so she ran away, she said her daddy's with the CIA
and she's all alone now but she's not afraid
Then out of the blue she said that soon she'd be inside the moon
Right out of the blue she told me soon she'd be inside the moon

We sat there talkin' on a hot spring day, but she was shakin' in
invisible rain. All of her life she'd know nothin' but pain
But she said it's o.k. cuz out of her pain she knows that soon
she'll be inside the moon
Right out other gloom she knows that soon she'll be inside the moon

Now spring is over and the Indian Summer is slippin' away
and I hear children playin' so happy and new
But I don't go around the railroad track since they took her away
And when I try to call her they won't let me through
they tell me she's doomed, but between me and you she took
a balloon she's inside the moon
Just between me and you she took a balloon she's inside the moon
she's inside the moon
she's inside the moon
